Travel Options for getting to the Roundup
There are a variety of ways to get to The Gargoyle House, where the Roundups are held -- planes, trains, busses and automobiles:
By Car
Driving instructions for The Gargoyle House are found at: Directions
By Bus
There are two US bus lines that service the Upper Valley/Northeast Kingdom; The Darmouth Coach and Greyhound Bus Lines, which took over the Vermont Transit busses. The Dartmouth Coach is a very good service, and includes wifi. It is the better choice. Greyhound has busses to White River Junction, and Dartmouth Coach brings you to Hanover, NH, which is about 30 minutes south of The Gargoyle House.
If you are coming from Montreal, Limocar has service to Magog which runs often and also includes wifi. In order to be picked up at Magog, you need a passport to cross the border and to arrange well ahead of time so a stableboy can bring you from Magog to the Gargoyle House, which is about an hour and 1/4 trip.
If you want to come by bus, you need to email The Master of the Horse and arrange for a stable boy to pick you up at the station on the Friday before the Roundup. Leaving on Sunday or Monday is expected, though longer stays can be arranged.
By Train to New Haven with Rental Car to GH
Get yourself to New York City then easy trip here
A good solution to travelling which gives you freedom while visiting is to take Metro North from Grand Central Station in NYC to New Haven, CT. There are rental car companies like Avis and Budget that operate directly from New Haven's Union Station with significantly lower rates than one can find in or near NYC. The drive up Interstate 91 to the Gargoyle House is direct and scenic. This option works well if you want freedom to tour or get around locally while staying at the House. This is also a good option for those flying into NYC who want more freedom to see New England during their stay.
By Train
Amtrak has a special train that runs from Washington, D.C. to Vermont, 'The Vermonter'. The closest station at which you can be picked up is 'White River Junction', which is located about 40 minutes south of The Gargoyle House. Reservations and schedule information can be found on the Amtrak website:
If you want to come by train, you need to email The Master of the Horse and arrange for a stable boy to pick you up at the station on the Friday before the Roundup. There is no easily reserved taxi service, though in the past, rental cars have been arranged through Avis -- see The Gargoyle House website for more information. Leaving on Sunday or Monday is expected, though longer stays can be arranged.
By Plane
The two closest international airports are Burlington, VT or Manchester, NH. To arrive by plane, before you book your tickets, be sure you have sent an email to The Master of the Horse and arranged for a stable boy to pick you up a the airport on the Friday before the Roundup. Sometimes, the stable boys can pick you up on a Thursday at these airports. Again, leaving on Sunday or Monday is expected, though longer stays can be arranged.
If you are flexible on your flight schedules, other arrangements can be made to bring you from the Boston Logan Airport, or possibly even one of the Montreal, Quebec airports. See the Ride Share/Ride Wanted menu option for more information on sharing rides from other cities
